“Former Student’s £150 Daily Nitrous Oxide Addiction”

A former university student has shared the harrowing story of her addiction to nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, which led her to spend up to £150 daily on gas canisters.

Jordan Micu, who first experimented with laughing gas at 21 while studying mathematics at the University of North Carolina, found herself spiraling into a severe addiction over the next decade. Initially viewing it as a recreational activity with friends, Jordan’s occasional use quickly escalated to a compulsive daily routine.

The easy availability of nitrous oxide at local smoke shops enabled Jordan to consume three to four canisters per day, costing her over £147. She resorted to inhaling the gas directly from the tanks, often using it throughout the night and upon waking up.

The addiction took a toll on Jordan’s physical and mental health. She experienced loss of bladder control and suffered from severe seizures, resulting in a diagnosis of epilepsy after undergoing medical tests. Subsequently, she lost control of her legs and had to undergo rehabilitation to relearn basic motor skills.

In a courageous move, Jordan admitted herself to a rehab facility in Los Angeles in February 2025 to overcome her addiction. She highlighted the long-lasting consequences of her nitrous oxide abuse, including the need for lifelong vitamin B12 injections and ongoing mental health challenges.

Reflecting on her journey, Jordan emphasized the seriousness of nitrous oxide abuse, cautioning others about its ease of access and the detrimental effects it can have on one’s life. She stressed the importance of seeking help and treatment to break free from the cycle of addiction.

Nitrous oxide, classified as a Class C drug, is illegal for recreational use in the UK and US, except for specific medical, dental, veterinary, and culinary purposes. Possession of nitrous oxide for unlawful use can lead to fines, community service, or imprisonment, underscoring the legal consequences of its misuse.

Aside from legal implications, nitrous oxide abuse poses significant health risks, ranging from headaches and dizziness to severe neurological damage and even death. Jordan’s story serves as a cautionary tale, shedding light on the destructive impact of substance abuse and the importance of seeking help to overcome addiction.
