Anthony Joshua has made a comeback to the boxing gym almost three weeks after being involved in a fatal car accident in Nigeria. The former two-time heavyweight champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck near Lagos, resulting in the loss of two of his close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Their funerals were held in London on January 4.
While in Nigeria for a holiday and family visit, Joshua, who recently knocked out YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, underwent hospital treatment before being discharged on New Year’s Eve. Amid speculation about his future in boxing, Joshua posted images on Snapchat showing him working out in the gym, engaging in various exercises for mental strength therapy.
Despite reports from Joshua’s uncle claiming that the boxer had decided to retire following the accident, Mirror Fighting reports that Joshua has not yet made a final decision regarding his boxing career. The driver of the car, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, who was charged in connection with the crash, is currently on bail awaiting trial.
Amid uncertainties about his fighting future, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, emphasized that no discussions were ongoing regarding Joshua’s return to the ring. Hearn expressed the need for Joshua to have time to recover emotionally and physically before making any decisions about his future in boxing.
