An individual dedicated to football who managed to raise more than £260,000 for charity through the sale of samosas. A mother who bravely plunged into the sea to rescue a 10-year-old boy from drowning. Additionally, a five-year-old girl who exhibited remarkable courage in rebuilding her life after losing both legs.
These outstanding individuals were among the recipients of the 2024 Pride of Britain Awards. Selected from a vast pool of public nominations, these ordinary yet extraordinary heroes were recognized during a prestigious ceremony held in London and hosted by Ashley Banjo and Carol Vorderman.
The event took an unforgettable turn when P&O Cruises, the new headline sponsor of the Pride of Britain Awards, surprised each of the 12 winners with a cruise holiday – an opportunity to embark on a memorable journey with their families.
We connected with three of the honorees who enjoyed a 14-night Caribbean expedition aboard Britannia, exploring eight sun-drenched islands and indulging in top-tier entertainment.
Aiyla Mota, Young Hero of Courage
At just before her fourth birthday, Aiyla Mota fell critically ill with what initially appeared to be a usual childhood infection. However, the infection swiftly progressed to sepsis, resulting in multiple organ failure. Doctors were compelled to amputate both her legs and five fingers to save her life.
Despite the ordeal, Aiyla, now five years old, has shown remarkable resilience. Her unwavering courage and positivity have astounded those around her, earning her a Pride of Britain Award and making her one of the youngest recipients in history.
Her mother, Eulanda, 28, from Middlesex, expressed, “Aiyla has always possessed a vibrant personality, and even after everything she has endured, she has not lost her sparkle. If anything, she is now even more exuberant, confident, and lively. She’s like Aiyla multiplied by 100!
“My grandmother believes it’s as though Aiyla recognizes her second chance at life and is seizing every moment.”
Following the award presentation by P&O Cruises, Aiyla and her family embarked on a Caribbean voyage, joined by Aiyla’s grandmother, Trisha, and Eulanda’s partner, Louis. They relished exploring Britannia’s 27 restaurants and bars, eight live entertainment venues, and four swimming pools.
“The cruise was an incredible getaway, and I am immensely thankful to P&O Cruises for this amazing experience,” shared Eulanda. “It marked our first cruise, and we were unsure of what to anticipate.
“One surprising aspect was how at times you forgot you were on a ship due to the plethora of activities available.
“Aiyla particularly enjoyed the kids’ club, entertainment, and staying up late! During our island visits, she adored the beaches and an excursion into the rainforest.
“For me, the stop in Barbados held special significance. It is where my ancestors hailed from, but I had never visited. Stepping onto the island, I felt truly blessed to be there and to connect with my family’s roots.”
