Tragic Death Linked to Contraceptive Pill

A tragic incident unfolded as a young woman passed away shortly after a night out with friends, due to a rare complication linked to her contraceptive pill, as revealed in an inquest. Áine Rose Hurst, aged 19, was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital after collapsing on March 11, with doctors discovering severe brain swelling before her passing two days later.

Áine’s mother, Kerry Hurst, shared that Áine had been out with friends on March 8 and had complained of a headache the next day. Initially dismissing it as a hangover, Kerry advised Áine to take paracetamol and hydrate, but the headache persisted. The inquest disclosed that Áine’s unfortunate demise resulted from a rare complication associated with the contraceptive pill she had been using since 2020.

Expressing their grief, Áine’s family questioned the decision to continue the medication despite concerns about her blood pressure. They fondly remembered Áine as a vibrant and loving individual who cherished her family and friends dearly. The family highlighted Áine’s infectious energy at gatherings, where she enjoyed leading karaoke and quizzes.

Statements from the family indicated that Áine had been advised to discontinue the combined contraceptive pill, Femodette, in December 2024 due to high blood pressure. However, after consulting with a GP the following month, she was instructed to resume the pill. The family raised concerns about the medical advice given and sought assurance that similar oversights would not recur.

Medical professionals at the inquest presented differing views on the pill’s role in Áine’s condition, with some suggesting further tests would have been necessary to confirm causation. The decision to continue with Femodette was defended by Dr. Onayade, who noted that Áine’s blood pressure readings were within acceptable limits.

Reflecting on the tragedy, the coroner acknowledged the complexity of medical decisions and the possibility of rare side effects from medications. Ultimately, the inquest concluded that the contraceptive pill played a significant role in Áine’s untimely death. The coroner emphasized the importance of recognizing and addressing rare complications from prescribed medications.

The inquest underscored the deep love and impact Áine had on her family, with the gathering reflecting the profound loss felt by all who knew her.
