Virgin Media O2 users in the UK are being warned about a new scam email circulating in their inboxes. The fraudulent email is taking advantage of the recent closure of O2’s outdated 3G mobile platform, which has been replaced by faster 4G and 5G services.
While most O2 customers are not affected by the platform switch, scammers are attempting to deceive users by sending fake emails claiming to be from the company and requesting a SIM card upgrade.
The deceptive email, titled “Alert: Switch to Your New 5G SIM for a Faster, Stronger Network,” appears authentic with official branding. However, Virgin Media O2 emphasizes that these messages are not legitimate and should be deleted without clicking on any links or replying.
This phishing scam aims to trick recipients into revealing sensitive information by impersonating a trusted organization. In some instances, scammers may even send a counterfeit SIM card and instruct users to access it with a PIN code. The email also prompts users to log in to the O2 app using a provided password and includes a “Contact Us” button that could lead victims directly to the fraudsters.
If successful, scammers could gain access to personal accounts or collect enough data to commit identity theft, potentially causing financial harm and disruption. It is recommended that users report any suspicious emails to phishing@virginmediao2.co.uk and contact the company directly through official channels if unsure about the authenticity of a communication.
To protect against such scams, individuals should exercise caution when interacting with emails or messages from service providers and seek verification from trusted sources before taking any actions.
