Retired horse racing icon Rachael Blackmore has shared the delightful news of her pregnancy with husband and fellow jockey Brian Hayes. The couple recently exchanged vows in a cozy ceremony in West Cork on January 5, after a decade-long acquaintance.
Rachael, who made history as the first female jockey to win the Grand National and to earn the top jockey title at Cheltenham, announced her pregnancy through an Instagram post featuring a picture of her Volvo car with a baby pram in the boot. The 36-year-old, who retired from professional racing last year after securing a remarkable 575 wins, had a distinguished career in the horse racing world.
Her retirement in May 2021 followed her notable victory with Minella Times at Aintree. Among her numerous accolades was being the leading rider at the Cheltenham Festival in 2021, where she triumphed in all five championship contests. Additionally, she clinched victories in various prestigious races, including the Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Rachael’s exceptional performances in 2021 earned her the World Sports Star award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. She was also honored as the greatest female jump jockey of all time by Cheltenham racecourse, receiving an induction into the track’s hall of fame.
The couple’s relationship, which began over ten years ago when they met at a stable in Co Carlow, has blossomed into a deep bond. Despite both being jockeys, they seldom talk about racing in their household. Rachael expressed gratitude for Brian’s pivotal role in her career upon her retirement, acknowledging his significant impact.
Brian, aged 34, boasts a Cheltenham Festival win during his 17-year career as a jockey, having ridden for notable figures like Willie Mullins. The pair has been seen together at various events such as Wimbledon, music festivals, and vacations, enjoying their time off the track.
