“4.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Costa del Sol Region”

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake has struck the Costa del Sol region, specifically near Fuengirola, Malaga, at a depth of 78 kilometers. The tremor occurred at 10:38 am local time (9:38 am GMT) today, as reported by the National Geographic Institute. Residents in Cordoba, located approximately 93 miles inland, also felt the quake. Experts believe the earthquake’s epicenter was in the upper mantle beneath the Iberian Peninsula, an area known for ongoing tectonic plate movements that can trigger seismic events. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries, and the extent of any potential damage caused by the earthquake remains unknown.

This seismic event follows a recent surge in earthquake activity in Andalusia, with 23 earthquakes recorded in the Malaga region over the past week. Just on Monday, a 3.2-magnitude tremor was felt near Estepona. Earlier in February, a 4.1-magnitude earthquake hit western Andalusia, impacting up to 200 municipalities in the area.

The earthquakes in southern Spain are linked to the gradual convergence of the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate, leading to periodic seismic movements in the region.
