Shaka Hislop Shares Prostate Cancer Battle

Former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop recently shared his battle with aggressive prostate cancer. Despite undergoing ‘radical’ surgery, Hislop disclosed that the cancer had spread.

In a heartfelt video on Instagram, the 56-year-old recounted his journey after an elevated PSA test led to the diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer. Following a radical prostatectomy in December last year, Hislop faced the setback of the cancer spreading to his pelvic bone six months later.

Hislop, known for his football career with clubs like Reading, Newcastle United, West Ham United, and Portsmouth, concluded his playing days with FC Dallas in the US. He transitioned to punditry, working notably for ESPN covering Premier League matches, with a special affinity for Newcastle.

Advocating for regular screenings, Hislop emphasized the importance of PSA checks for men over 50, urging earlier testing for those of African descent. Despite no family history of cancer, genetic testing did not rule out risks for Hislop, underscoring the need for vigilance.

Expressing concern for Caribbean men, who face higher prostate cancer mortality rates, Hislop urged proactive testing and vigilance to improve survival rates. His powerful message highlighted the life-saving potential of early detection and treatment for prostate cancer.
