Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are set to make history with a highly anticipated rematch at The Las Vegas Sphere in September, marking the first professional boxing event to take place at this iconic venue.
The two legendary boxers previously faced off in a memorable showdown known as the ‘Fight of the Century’ in 2015, where Mayweather emerged victorious. Despite both fighters retiring from the sport, they have agreed to a rematch that will be streamed globally by Netflix on September 19.
The upcoming Mayweather vs. Pacquiao II is expected to break records in terms of revenue, following their previous bout that generated an impressive £4.6 million in pay-per-view purchases and a record gate of $72.2 million (£53.5 million) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Mayweather and Pacquiao earned substantial sums from their initial fight, with Mayweather reportedly making $250 million (£185.3 million) and Pacquiao banking $150 million (£111.2 million). Mayweather, with an unbeaten 50-0 record, will defend his legacy in the rematch, which promises to be a professionally sanctioned contest.
Pacquiao expressed his excitement for the rematch, emphasizing the significance of this event in boxing history and his determination to avenge his previous loss against Mayweather. Mayweather, on the other hand, remains confident in his ability to replicate his past victory.
Leading up to the rematch, both fighters are expected to engage in warm-up fights, with Pacquiao scheduled to face Ruslan Provodnikov on April 18, while Mayweather is likely to battle Mike Tyson the following week.
The highly anticipated event will be a significant milestone for The Sphere, being the first boxing match to headline the venue and only the second sports event following UFC 306 in September 2024.
