An individual believed to have connections with the perpetrator of the Manchester synagogue assault, Jihad Al-Shamie, has been formally accused of four terrorism-related charges.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has disclosed that Mohammad Bashir, aged 31, is set to be brought before court on Friday on accusations of aiding Al-Shamie in conducting prior surveillance of a UK defense facility.
Al-Shamie was fatally shot by law enforcement after carrying out a violent incident involving a knife and a vehicle at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in October, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to four others.
Bashir is facing charges of disseminating online content with the intent to promote terrorist activities. His court appearance is scheduled at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, with the CPS clarifying that his alleged assistance was not related to the synagogue attack from two months ago.
Frank Ferguson, the Chief Crown Prosecutor of the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, stated, “Today, we have chosen to press charges against Mohammad Bashir for terrorism offenses, based on an investigation carried out by Counter Terrorism Policing North West into his association with Jihad Al-Shamie.”
Adrian Daulby, aged 53, and Melvin Cravitz, aged 66, both residing in Crumpsall, lost their lives during the tragic incident. Law enforcement authorities indicated that the attacker might have been influenced by radical Islamist beliefs.
Al-Shamie, reportedly a college dropout, was originally from Syria but obtained British citizenship in 2006 at around the age of 16, having arrived in the UK as a young child. He was under police investigation for an alleged rape when he executed the violent assault with a car and a knife.
Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts, overseeing Counter Terrorism Policing North West, mentioned, “Following the authorization for charges by the CPS, Mohammad Asim Bashir has been charged this morning with several terrorism offenses, including preparations for terrorist actions.”
Potts clarified that the charges against Bashir are not directly linked to the synagogue attack but emerged from investigative efforts by the police team. Bashir has been detained pending his court appearance, and the ongoing investigation into the attack continues.
Law enforcement authorities urge anyone with relevant information to come forward and express gratitude to the community for their cooperation and understanding during the investigative process.
