“Water bills to rise by £33/year in England and Wales”

Water bills in England and Wales are set to increase by an average of £33 annually starting this April. This uptick, equivalent to around 5.4% or £2.70 per month, surpasses the current inflation rate of 3.4%.

Regulator Ofwat had previously authorized water companies to hike average bills by 36% over a five-year span until 2030. These increments are deemed necessary by Water UK to support a £104 billion investment initiative aimed at enhancing infrastructure and curbing sewage overflows. Nonetheless, critics argue that the surge in bills will burden families already grappling with escalating expenses.

Water UK projects an additional 300,000 households will benefit from social tariffs in 2026/27, totaling around 2.5 million recipients. Social tariffs entail discounted rates for water and sewerage charges, with an anticipated average discount of approximately 40%.

David Henderson, Chief Executive of Water UK, acknowledged the unwelcome nature of bill hikes but emphasized the crucial need for funding to fortify water supplies, drive economic growth, and prevent sewage contamination of water bodies. He assured that approximately 2.5 million households will receive substantial discounts on their water bills.

Mike Keil, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council for Water (CCW), highlighted a surge in complaints regarding water bill affordability, underscoring the need for transparent spending by water companies. Chris Walters, interim Chief Executive of Ofwat, reiterated the commitment to monitor company performance and ensure accountability in delivering promised improvements.

While customers cannot switch water providers, minor adjustments like reducing water usage and installing water-saving devices can help trim costs. Initiatives such as free water-saving devices and water meters, recommended by financial expert Martin Lewis, offer potential savings for households.
