A new fraudulent scheme targeting Apple users has resurfaced, preying on concerns about low iCloud storage. Apple’s cloud storage service is crucial for many iPhone owners, serving as a secure digital backup for photos, documents, and other important files, as well as facilitating seamless device transitions.
Despite its convenience, iCloud has limited storage capacities, with prices starting at 99p per month for 50GB, £2.99 for 200GB, and £8.99 for 2TB. Exploiting these limitations, scammers are leveraging fears of account suspension due to storage fullness to deceive individuals into disclosing personal and financial information.
While iCloud scams are not new, cybersecurity experts warn of a recent surge in fake emails claiming users have exceeded their storage limits. These deceptive messages, often posing as Apple communications, falsely assert that files are no longer being backed up due to surpassed storage limits, prompting users to upgrade their storage plans through malicious links designed to extract sensitive data.
Malwarebytes cautions that these emails, varying in content, all share a common objective: coercing individuals to make a payment to prevent iCloud files from being erased. The websites linked in these emails request personal and payment details to complete the transaction.
To enhance user safety, new guidelines emphasize that Apple does not send unsolicited emails regarding iCloud storage issues. Legitimate alerts about nearing storage capacity are displayed within device settings or as official system notifications, not via external messages. Users are advised to verify their iCloud usage directly through device settings to avoid falling victim to such scams.
Additionally, five rules are recommended for safeguarding iCloud accounts:
1. Access your account solely through Apple’s official website or device settings.
2. Never share your password with anyone.
3. Exercise caution when clicking on links in unexpected messages and emails.
4. Use updated anti-malware software with web protection features enabled.
5. Refrain from engaging with suspicious websites or payment requests to mitigate risks.
