In a recent report by consumer group Which?, it was revealed that major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. The study, based on feedback from over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, highlighted that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.
The survey aimed to assess how well providers are meeting customer expectations. Results indicated that the prominent “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of customer satisfaction and service quality.
Among the top-performing networks identified in the rankings were Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. While EE ranked the highest among the major providers, O2 and Three were positioned among the lower-ranked networks.
Price emerged as a significant factor in the report, with customers on the Big Four networks paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, compared to just £9 for users on smaller networks. Despite the lower prices, smaller providers often utilize the infrastructure of major networks, ensuring comparable signal strength and service quality without the premium cost associated with well-known brands.
Additionally, switching between networks is simpler than many consumers realize, with some individuals able to transition in as little as 10 minutes. One member shared their experience of leaving O2 for SMARTY, saving around £200 annually after a price increase.
Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform major mobile firms by offering better customer service and more affordable deals, providing certainty to households facing financial challenges.
Customers nearing the end of their contracts were encouraged to consider switching to providers offering better value. The full scores from Which? revealed the top performers in customer satisfaction, with Talkmobile leading the rankings followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY, showcasing the competitiveness of smaller networks in the mobile industry.
