“Skipton Named UK’s Happiest Town: Rightmove Index”

A North Yorkshire market town nestled in the picturesque countryside has been identified as the happiest place to reside in the UK. Skipton, with its serene natural surroundings, amiable locals, and top-notch educational institutions, clinched the top spot in Rightmove’s 14th annual Happy at Home Index. Richmond-upon-Thames in London secured the second position for the second consecutive year.

Skipton, home to a population of 15,000, is renowned as the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales and thrived historically as a hub for sheep and wool trade. It leads Rightmove’s list of the most joyful locales this year, after ranking second in 2020 and sixth in the previous year’s assessment.

According to Patrick McCutcheon from Yorkshire estate agent Dacre, Son & Hartley, Skipton offers a coveted living environment with immediate access to the Dales and a stunning backdrop of the region’s beautiful countryside, all while being conveniently located just over an hour away from the Lake District. The town also boasts easy connectivity to vibrant cities like Leeds, Bradford, Harrogate, and Manchester via the M65, enhancing both leisure and business opportunities. Furthermore, regular train services from Skipton to London Kings Cross have been introduced. The historic castle, vibrant high street market, and picturesque waterways and moors in the vicinity provide endless recreational possibilities for residents.

Residents of Skipton were commended by Rightmove for their sense of authenticity and the town’s affordability. The average house price in Skipton stands at £326,093, below the national average of £364,833. While the town excelled in these aspects, it scored lower on access to job opportunities and proximity to friends and family.

Colleen Babcock, Rightmove’s property expert, highlighted the multifaceted factors contributing to residents’ happiness in their living environment, such as community, green spaces, and essential services. The study emphasized the significance of nature, friendly neighbors, and the ability to be oneself in determining satisfaction with one’s place of residence. Skipton’s rise in rankings this year signifies its well-deserved recognition following its consistent performance in previous assessments.

In addition to Skipton, other entrants in the top 10 happiest places to live include Richmond upon Thames, Camden, Harrogate, Woodbridge, Altrincham, Macclesfield, Stirling, Cirencester, and Hexham. The study also revealed regional happiness rankings, with South West England residents emerging as the happiest overall, while the East Midlands residents reported lower satisfaction levels. Notably, rural dwellers expressed higher levels of contentment compared to urban and suburban counterparts, with proximity to nature and green spaces playing a significant role in residents’ happiness. Happiness with one’s living environment was observed to increase with age, with older residents more likely to rate their area positively compared to younger individuals.
