Britons have been cautioned about the major etiquette mistakes to avoid while traveling on trains during the upcoming Christmas rush. The new study highlights behaviors such as speaking loudly on phones, playing music or videos at high volume, and displaying rudeness towards staff that can disrupt the journeys for fellow passengers.
Despite these warnings, rail operators like London North Eastern Railway (LNER) have taken steps to enhance the travel experience this holiday season. They have increased the number of trains and seats, resulting in quicker and smoother trips. The research, conducted by LNER, also suggests ways in which passengers can contribute to a more pleasant journey, such as offering seats to those in need and assisting travelers with prams.
The busiest day for travel along the East Coast Main Line is anticipated to be Saturday, December 20, with an estimated 43,000 journeys planned. Roads are also expected to be congested on this day and the preceding Friday, mirroring last year’s traffic patterns around locations like the M60 near the Trafford Centre in Manchester and the M25 near Heathrow Airport.
A survey reveals that the most disliked behavior during train journeys is loud phone conversations (59%), followed by playing loud music or videos (53%), leaving behind rubbish (49%), and being impolite to staff (43%). Other disliked habits include hogging seats (41%), putting feet on seats (40%), and consuming odorous food (37%). Passengers are advised to be mindful of these behaviors, especially during the busy holiday period.
To accommodate the increased holiday travel demand, LNER has implemented a new timetable effective from Sunday, December 14. David Flesher, the commercial director, emphasized the importance of small acts of kindness during the festive season, such as offering assistance with luggage or giving up seats. The introduction of more services through the new timetable aims to ensure a smooth travel experience for customers during the busiest weeks of the year.
