“Disabled Persons Railcard Expanded to Include More Disabilities”

Starting today, a wider range of individuals, including Blue Badge users, will now be eligible for the Disabled Persons Railcard. This expansion broadens the eligibility criteria to encompass both visible and non-visible disabilities.

The Disabled Persons Railcard offers a 1/3 discount on rail tickets, resulting in an average yearly saving of about £126. The cost for a one-year railcard is £20, while a three-year railcard is priced at £54. To discover more money-saving tips on transportation, click here.

Additionally, the discount extends to one companion aged 16 and above traveling with the cardholder. The eligibility criteria have been updated to include individuals with specific conditions. These changes were initially announced in November 2025 and are set to be further extended in September 2026, incorporating long-term medical conditions and neurodiversity issues impacting travel ability.

Full details regarding evidence requirements and application guidelines for the upcoming expansion will be released before September. Jacqueline Starr, Executive Chair and CEO at Rail Delivery Group, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in rail travel, aiming to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all passengers.

Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, highlighted the significance of the railcard expansion in promoting inclusivity and affordability for daily commutes, educational journeys, and personal visits. The Accessible Railways Roadmap is central to enhancing accessibility and transforming the railway system for the future under Great British Railways.
