A mother of two nearly faced a life-threatening situation in front of her children after what she thought was a common winter flu turned out to be a severe infection. Roberta Alisauskaite, 27, initially dismissed her symptoms as a cold she might have picked up from work, along with an abscess in one of her wisdom teeth for which she was taking antibiotics. However, her condition worsened rapidly, leading to coughing, shaking, and a soaring temperature.
Roberta, a mental health nurse from Carmarthenshire in South West Wales, shared her alarming experience of battling sepsis. Initially feeling unwell with flu-like symptoms, she described a sudden escalation of her condition on October 20 when she experienced septic shock.
Her young sons, Sean Haughey, 8, and Koby Haughey, 6, noticed their mother’s distress and sprang into action to seek help. Roberta recounted how her eldest son called emergency services upon realizing she was unresponsive. Her mother then took her to the hospital after being informed of the three-hour ambulance wait.
Sepsis Trust UK emphasizes the critical nature of sepsis, highlighting the importance of prompt recognition and action to save lives. Roberta underwent various medical tests in the hospital to identify the source of the infection but without success. Although her consultant suggested a potential link between her flu-like symptoms, tooth issue, and the infection, the exact cause remains unconfirmed.
Reflecting on the impact of the ordeal on her children, Roberta expressed gratitude for her health and emphasized the need for awareness of sepsis symptoms, particularly during the winter season. She stressed the significance of not overlooking seemingly common illnesses, as they could indicate a more severe underlying condition.
Roberta’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the importance of being vigilant about health issues, especially for parents with young children. She encourages others to pay attention to any unusual symptoms and seek medical help promptly to prevent potentially life-threatening situations.
