An exceptional young man, who was described as “inspirational,” has passed away at the age of 27 almost ten years after a tragic football incident left him paralyzed. Ellis Robinson sadly died on November 28. In 2016, during a five-a-side football match in Oldham, Greater Manchester, he sustained a severe spinal cord injury when another player accidentally fell on him while he was seated on the ground.
The footballer, who was 17 at the time of the incident, underwent immediate surgery and underwent an extensive recovery process that included weeks in the hospital and nearly 18 months at a specialized rehabilitation center in Southport. During his rehabilitation, he received a visit from the renowned rapper Stormzy. Following the life-altering accident, Ellis required constant care.
Despite the challenges he faced, Ellis had made significant strides in rebuilding his life prior to his unexpected passing. In 2023, he launched his own clothing line named Spyne and had also embarked on studies in accountancy, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. His mother, Lisa Robinson, paid a heartfelt tribute to her son, describing him as an “incredible” individual who had a positive impact on many lives.
Before the accident, Ellis excelled as a talented athlete, being part of Rochdale AFC’s academy and having trials for England Schoolboys. He was actively involved in various sports such as basketball, rugby, and gymnastics, demonstrating both athletic and academic success. Lisa highlighted his determination, ambition, and sense of humor, emphasizing his commitment to giving his all in everything he pursued.
Despite the mental challenges he faced post-accident, Ellis remained a source of guidance and comfort for others, always ready to offer support and uplift those around him. His adventurous spirit was evident in his pursuits, such as traveling alone to watch a Formula 1 race at Silverstone in his motorized wheelchair. Lisa reflected on his inspirational nature, describing him as someone who faced his battles head-on and emerged stronger.
Ellis’s untimely death has left a void for all who knew him, with tributes pouring in on social media platforms. Rochdale AFC expressed their sorrow over the loss of Ellis, a former academy player, and shared their condolences with his family and friends. A fundraising effort has been initiated to support his family, along with plans for a memorial boxing match in his honor.
A minute’s silence was observed by AFC Limeside in memory of Ellis before a recent game, and his funeral service is scheduled to be held on Thursday, December 18 at Oldham Crematorium at 10 am. The community continues to mourn the loss of a remarkable individual who touched the hearts of many during his time on earth.
