WestJet Prepares for Potential Flight Attendant Dispute

WestJet, the second-largest airline in Canada, is making preparations to gradually scale back its operations in anticipation of a potential strike or lockout by its flight attendants. However, this preemptive measure does not imply that a labor dispute is inevitable, as negotiations between the union and the company are still ongoing.

In a communication addressed to certain employees and obtained by CBC News, WestJet’s Vice President of Inflight Operations, Robert Antoniuk, clarified that the agreement outlining the winding down of operations is not a sign of escalating towards labor action, despite outlining the procedure in case negotiations with the CUPE WestJet Component fail.

The union representatives from CUPE emphasized their desire for a fair deal without resorting to a strike. Federal mediators, under the supervision of Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon, are actively engaged in the negotiation process. MacKinnon expressed optimism that the talks are progressing positively towards a mutually agreed resolution.

John Gradek, a former Air Canada director and current faculty lecturer at McGill University, noted that it is standard practice for airlines like WestJet to have contingency plans in place to slow down operations before a labor dispute is confirmed. This preparation ensures that essential resources like aircraft and crew members are not stranded abroad in the event of a shutdown.

While neither WestJet nor the union has issued specific flight cancellations related to a potential labor dispute, WestJet has offered flexibility to passengers by waiving cancellation or change fees for travel between July 30 and August 4. The CUPE WestJet Component, representing approximately 4,400 union members, could legally commence a strike by August 2 following a strong vote in favor.

The core issue in the negotiations revolves around the compensation structure for flight attendants, particularly regarding the payment for all hours worked. Despite differing perspectives on this matter, both parties are striving to reach a resolution to avoid disruption to operations and inconvenience to passengers.

In conclusion, WestJet is proactively managing the situation to prevent any significant impact on its operations and customer service amid the ongoing labor negotiations with its flight attendants’ union.
