Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a rut almost four years ago. At the suggestion of her brother, she delved into her passion for K-pop and BTS, a globally renowned boy band. Following her brother’s advice, Vann founded BTS Army Toronto, a local fan club that organizes events and meet-ups centered around the South Korean band. Tragically, Vann’s brother passed away shortly after the club’s inception. Despite her grief, the 43-year-old persevered, expanding the organization into a vibrant community that hosts numerous fans at gatherings, arranges giveaways and fundraisers, and advocates for local Korean businesses.
Preparations are underway for BTS’s highly anticipated return to Toronto after more than a decade. Vann, along with her 24-year-old son Jordan and a team of approximately 10 individuals, co-manages BTS Army Toronto. Reflecting on her experience, Vann expressed that while she initiated the community for others, it has ultimately enriched her life in immeasurable ways, fostering profound friendships and shared love for music.
As part of their Arirang World Tour, BTS is set to deliver sold-out performances at Rogers Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. Known for their dedicated fan base, BTS enthusiasts exhibit extensive knowledge of the band’s history, members, and music catalog. Toronto serves as the exclusive Canadian stop on the world tour, symbolizing a significant moment for both BTS and their devoted followers.
Vann highlighted the band’s impactful music, addressing themes like mental health, self-acceptance, and personal growth, as a key factor behind fans’ unwavering devotion. Emphasizing BTS’s commitment to creating meaningful content, she praised their artistic endeavors beyond mere commercial success, citing their music’s potential to inspire positive change.
Having wrapped up mandatory military service, BTS is resuming their global tour, encompassing 88 shows across 34 cities in 23 countries through March 2027. The group’s success trajectory from humble beginnings to international acclaim culminated in their chart-topping single “Dynamite” in 2020, marking a significant milestone for Korean pop music.
Fans eagerly anticipate BTS’s return to Toronto, with Vann herself preparing to attend both concerts, underscoring the emotional significance of witnessing her favorite band perform in her hometown. The City of Toronto has also embraced BTS’s visit by temporarily renaming a section of Yonge Street as “BTS Boulevard.”
The buildup to the concerts has seen a surge in excitement, with fans flocking to the official BTS merchandise pop-up store on Bloor Street. Enthusiasts have been actively engaged in merch purchases, further fueling the anticipation surrounding BTS’s arrival. As concert-goers gear up for the weekend shows, Vann’s BTS Army Toronto plans to provide a range of engaging activities and support services for attendees.
Looking ahead to the live performances, Vann expressed curiosity about the concert’s intimate setting at Rogers Stadium, reconfigured to accommodate BTS’s innovative 360-degree stage.
