Osee Podolsky, the general manager of Podolski Honey Farms in Ethelbert, Manitoba, expressed concerns about the impact of the recently imposed 50% tariffs by the United States on Canadian goods, including natural honey. Podolsky highlighted that the majority of the honey produced by their family business is typically exported to customers in the U.S. However, with the new tariffs, the farm faces the risk of bankruptcy as it becomes financially unfeasible to continue shipping to their usual American clients.
The tariffs were implemented after failed trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the U.S. made unreasonable demands that undermined the benefits to Canada, leading to the breakdown of the talks. Issues were raised regarding Canada’s French language protections and restrictions on trade deals with other countries, prompting Canada to walk away from what was deemed a detrimental agreement.
In response to the U.S. tariffs, Canada plans to retaliate with dollar-for-dollar tariffs set to be enforced post-Labour Day. This move aims to protect Canadian industries and sovereignty from unfair trade practices. Podolski Honey Farms, like many other businesses, feels the brunt of the tariff dispute, impacting their sales and potentially leading to financial hardships.
Loren Remillard, the president and CEO of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, expressed disappointment over the tariffs’ effects on local businesses. Despite the economic challenges ahead, Remillard emphasized the importance of standing firm in trade negotiations and supporting Canadian-made products.
The tariffs have also affected other industries, such as steel, in cities like Selkirk. Mayor Larry Johannson highlighted the need for increased trade opportunities within Canada and with other countries to mitigate the impact of the tariffs on local businesses.
Podolsky stressed the mutual benefits of trade between Canada and the U.S., urging for a resolution to remove the tariffs. He emphasized the significance of finding an agreement promptly to avoid prolonged economic disruptions for businesses on both sides of the border.
