German authorities are currently investigating an incident at Leipzig airport involving a drone carrying explosives and a detonator. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to increase retaliation against countries supporting Ukraine. Lavrov stated in an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, that harsher methods would be employed to dismantle support for Kyiv’s military efforts.
The drone, loaded with an unknown explosive device, was discovered in the cargo operations zone security area near the south runway of Leipzig airport, a facility classified as critical infrastructure. The airport is strategically significant as a NATO base used for transporting armaments, ammunition, and military equipment to Ukraine through Ukrainian cargo companies.
The presence of the drone next to a Ukrainian cargo plane is seen as a heightened threat level for Germany by the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. He described the incident as part of a professional hybrid threat scenario and emphasized the seriousness of the situation.
While German authorities are investigating the origin of the drone, U.S. intelligence officials have suggested that the drone likely belonged to the Russian government. Berlin is responding cautiously, enhancing anti-drone capabilities and refraining from premature attribution until the investigation is complete.
Dobrindt highlighted that Russia employs various tactics, including drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations, across Europe, particularly concerning the upcoming regional elections in Germany. He underscored the continuous daily challenges posed by such hybrid warfare tactics.
Germany has been a frequent target of hybrid warfare, encompassing espionage, sabotage, cyber attacks, and covert actions with the aim of destabilizing the country. Recent incidents, such as the uncovering of a Russian assassination plot and the arrest of a suspected spy, have raised concerns about Russia’s interference in German affairs.
The Institute for Strategic Dialogue has been monitoring Russia’s online interference campaign, Operation Overload, targeting Germany, France, and Ukraine to undermine Ukraine’s efforts and destabilize democracies. Dobrindt emphasized the importance of understanding and countering disinformation attempts, especially in the context of upcoming elections.
Hans-Jakob Schindler, from the Counter Extremism Project, characterized the drone incident in Leipzig as an aggressive escalation of Russia’s interference tactics in Germany. He raised questions about the boundary between defense and direct conflict, emphasizing the need to establish clear limits to deter further aggressive actions.
Schindler noted Lavrov’s recent remarks as a significant shift in Russia’s stance on its interference operations, signaling a more aggressive approach towards Europe, the West, and NATO. Lavrov’s statements were viewed as a veiled admission of Russia’s involvement in hybrid warfare operations and a warning of intensified aggression in the future.
