Shortly thereafter, their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was apprehended and subsequently charged with their murders.
Reflecting on the haunting incident, Jake shared the harrowing moment when his sister, Romy, contacted him on that fateful day, delivering the devastating news. The shock of losing his father and the uncertainty surrounding his mother’s whereabouts plunged Jake into a state of disbelief.
Nick faced formal charges on July 20, accused of two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his renowned filmmaker, actor, and activist father, Rob Reiner, and his mother, Michele, a talented photographer and producer. Despite pleading not guilty, the LA County grand jury, in an indictment unveiled on August 12, alleged that Nick, who had a well-documented history of mental health struggles and addiction battles, had premeditated the attack on his parents.
In a collaborative effort in 2016, Rob and Nick Reiner co-produced a film titled “Being Charlie,” which drew inspiration from Nick’s personal struggles with addiction. The movie depicted the tumultuous journey of a rebellious teenage son of a former actor turned politician who finds solace in love amid addiction.
