Canada is gearing up for its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest with high hopes of making a memorable impact. The process of selecting Canada’s representative for Eurovision is currently underway, with the application portal officially open for aspiring performers. While the opportunity is open to all, CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking individuals with a proven track record in the music industry.
Several potential competitors have already expressed interest in representing Canada on the Eurovision stage. Among them are Rêve, a Juno Award-winning artist for Dance Recording of the Year, Talk, who won the Juno for breakthrough artist of the year, and bbno$, a multiple-time Fan Choice Juno winner.
To qualify as a Eurovision contestant, individuals must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, at least 18 years old by May 1, 2027, capable of international travel, and able to pass standard background checks. Additionally, applicants will need to submit two videos showcasing their live performance skills and their passion for Eurovision.
The selection process involves a shortlist of finalists being chosen by CBC/Radio-Canada after the application portal closes on September 9. The chosen artist will have a significant role in shaping the final song for Eurovision, although they are not required to bring their own music to the table. The selected artist will be actively involved in the songwriting process and preparing for the Eurovision Grand Final in May.
While established artists are currently preferred for the inaugural Canadian Eurovision entry, future competitions may see a shift towards more emerging talents. The selected artist will have the opportunity to showcase their talents on a global stage, with the exposure offered by Eurovision being likened to having more viewers than the Super Bowl halftime show.
