Breanna Leininger, overseeing U.S. operations at Pacific Customs Brokers in Vancouver, highlighted the substantial change in customs requirements. The volume of documentation requested by border officials for shipped goods has multiplied tenfold compared to previous years, with a noticeable increase in deeper inspections.
Importers are now facing more stringent demands for comprehensive paperwork, including labor and manufacturing records, to ensure compliance with product classifications and trade agreements. The evolving nature of these requirements adds complexity and uncertainty to the import process, as noted by Leininger.
Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection reveals a 26% projected increase in audits this year compared to 2024. In the first half of the year, customs authorities collected $70.6 million in trade penalties, marking a significant rise from previous years.
The heightened enforcement measures coincide with a trade conflict between Canada and the U.S., characterized by escalating tariffs on both sides. The resulting delays and administrative burdens are driving up costs for businesses involved in cross-border trade, discouraging some from pursuing such transactions due to the challenges posed.
