The recent agreement by the Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) government to cover Islanders’ MRI scans at a private clinic in Summerside comes with an estimated price tag of up to $720,000, as confirmed by Health P.E.I. This move aims to reduce the need for patients requiring magnetic resonance imaging to travel to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown.
Health P.E.I. also mentioned that a previous agreement providing MRI scans for Islanders at a private clinic in Moncton ended on March 31, costing the province $3.8 million and offering 2,600 MRI appointments for Island residents. While there is currently no contract with the Moncton facility, Health P.E.I. assured that additional capacity would be added as necessary to maintain service levels.
MRI scans are crucial for detecting tumors and diagnosing internal issues in organs like the liver or brain. The Summerside clinic is set to commence publicly funded scans this month. The agreement between Health P.E.I. and the province is lauded as a means to reduce wait times for scans.
Data on the province’s website reveals wait times of up to 107 days for semi-urgent MRIs, 730 days for non-urgent scans, and 23 days for urgent cases. The target wait times are 28 days for semi-urgent, 84 days for non-urgent, and 14 days for urgent MRI scans.
Despite the positive outlook on the agreement, some skepticism was expressed by Gord McNeilly, the health critic for the Opposition Liberal Party, who raised concerns about the growing presence of private clinics in the healthcare system. He emphasized the importance of investing in improving access within the public healthcare system rather than relying on private facilities.
