As summer draws to a close, children in the UK are gearing up to head back to school after the holidays. Parents are being cautioned to be vigilant as Superdrug reports a significant increase in cases of head lice. Sales of their head lice treatment spray have surged by 21.2% in recent weeks.
The rise in cases is typical during the back-to-school period. However, Superdrug’s Pharmacy Superintendent, Niamh Mcmillan, emphasizes that returning to school doesn’t automatically mean dealing with head lice infestations.
Head lice, small insects that feed on human blood, primarily from the scalp, are prevalent worldwide. While head lice are not exclusive to schools, the school environment facilitates their transmission due to the close contact among children during various activities.
According to Nimah, head lice infestations are most common among children aged four to twelve and are more likely during warmer months when outdoor play increases the chances of transmission.
Parents are advised to check their child’s head for lice by examining the hair under bright light with a fine-toothed comb, focusing on areas like the nape of the neck and behind the ears where lice and nits are often found.
Although prevention of head lice is challenging, regular wet combing with a detection comb can help detect them early. Parents can also reduce the risk by educating their children to avoid head-to-head contact and sharing personal items like hats and brushes.
Contrary to common belief, head lice are not linked to poor hygiene but are typically spread through direct head-to-head contact. Superdrug’s Own Brand Head Lice Treatment, priced at £5.99, is recommended for eliminating head lice and eggs effectively.
If initial treatment fails, consulting a Superdrug Pharmacist for alternative options is advisable. Community Hygiene Concern offers a video guide on wet combing for head lice.
