An expert in cancer treatment is advising men not to overlook minor health issues, emphasizing that swift action could be life-saving. While occasional aches and pains are typically not cause for concern, oncologists are concerned that significant health conditions, such as cancer, may be diagnosed too late due to data indicating lower rates of men contacting their general practitioners compared to women.
Recent findings from the ONS Health Insight Survey reveal that only 33.5% of men sought medical attention from their GP within the past 28 days for themselves or a family member, in contrast to 45.8% of women.
Dr. Jiri Kubes, a radiation oncologist at the Proton Therapy Center, highlighted the ongoing trend of men being less likely to seek medical help promptly. He emphasized the importance of not ignoring certain subtle symptoms that could indicate serious health issues.
Dr. Kubes outlined six symptoms that men should not disregard:
– Back pain, especially if persistent or deep in the lower back or hips, warrants medical attention if it worsens or does not improve after a few weeks.
– Persistent fatigue, which could signify underlying health conditions, including cancer, particularly when accompanied by other symptoms.
– Unintentional weight loss without changes in diet or exercise habits should prompt a discussion with a healthcare provider.
– Any unusual lumps or bumps on the body that are not typical should be evaluated by a GP.
– Lingering sore throat lasting over three weeks, especially with hoarseness or swallowing difficulties, should be checked by a doctor as it could indicate throat cancer.
– Changes in urinary habits, such as a weak stream or difficulty emptying, should be investigated for potential urological cancers.
Dr. Kubes emphasized the importance of addressing these symptoms promptly to ensure early detection and timely treatment if necessary.
