“UK Mobile Networks Phasing Out 3G: Upgrade Required for Older Devices”

If you have an older smartphone, you might soon have to upgrade to a newer model. Major mobile networks in the UK have been gradually phasing out 3G support, which could lead to older devices losing access to data services like WhatsApp.

Virgin Media O2 is the latest among the top four UK providers to announce the shutdown of their 3G network in select areas, starting from July 16 in places such as Norwich, Telford, and Guildford, followed by Torquay on August 4. The complete discontinuation across the UK is expected by the year’s end.

The move is part of O2’s strategy to enhance 4G and 5G connectivity for customers, aiming for faster and more reliable service. Customers in areas where 3G services are being phased out will need to upgrade to a compatible 4G or 5G device to continue using mobile data services.

O2 is slightly behind its competitors as Vodafone, Three, and EE have already completed their 3G network switch-off. Fortunately, most modern smartphones should not face any issues, with only very old models potentially experiencing connectivity problems.

While the majority of customers may not require immediate action, Virgin Media O2 is reaching out to all users in the UK who still use non-4G or 5G devices to offer assistance. Customers can seek further information and support at their local O2 store and are reminded about the option to recycle old devices through O2 Recycle for cash.

3G was first introduced in the UK in 2003 but has now been surpassed by the more reliable and faster 4G and 5G technologies. Devices operating on 3G are limited to download speeds below 5Mbps, whereas 5G can deliver speeds exceeding 100Mbps, ideal for modern needs like on-the-go streaming.
