Carers working at a nursing home in Liverpool are being accused of mistreating an elderly resident who suffers from dementia. The allegations include putting underpants on the woman’s head and engaging in disrespectful behavior towards her. The abuse was reportedly captured on CCTV footage over a period of time.
Five staff members, including senior care assistant William Vasey and his colleague Wendy Shelley, are currently on trial at Liverpool Crown Court. Vasey is accused of placing underwear on the resident’s head, claiming it was to assist with her hair styling. Shelley allegedly shook her body in front of the elderly woman, justifying it as a playful act.
Co-workers Josh Ireland, Valerie Marshall, and Adelle McIlhatton are also facing charges related to the mistreatment of the resident. The prosecution claims that the defendants failed to provide proper care and instead participated in humiliating and mocking the elderly woman.
During the trial, it was revealed that the defendants were seen in the dining area of the care home, where the mistreatment took place. The prosecutor highlighted specific instances where the staff members were allegedly involved in inappropriate actions towards the resident, with no intervention from others present.
According to the prosecution, the defendants’ behavior was captured on video, showing a pattern of disrespect and neglect towards the vulnerable resident. Despite claims of innocence and explanations given by the accused, the court is examining the evidence presented against them.
The trial is ongoing, with the defendants maintaining their innocence and denying the charges brought against them. Judge Katherine Pierpoint is presiding over the case, which is expected to continue for several days as further details are brought to light.
