A renowned jockey is under scrutiny following an incident where he was captured making racially offensive remarks in public. Noel Callow, known as ‘the King,’ boasts a record of more than 2,000 wins, including five at the prestigious Group 1 level, amassing over £20 million in Australia.
Recently, Callow was embroiled in a controversy after serving a two-month suspension for instigating a physical altercation with another jockey that resulted in his concussion back in May. Australian racing outlet Racenet reported that the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission is currently reviewing a video, believed to be from last year, showing Callow engaging in racist behavior.
The Commission confirmed that they are investigating the video, stating, “A video was recently brought to the attention of the Commission and is presently under investigation.” Racenet has viewed two clips, one of which depicts Callow interacting with an indigenous man, making derogatory comments about the man’s hygiene.
In the video, the man reveals his living conditions and declines Callow’s offer of food, expressing a desire for a beer instead. Callow responds by suggesting the man shower first before he would buy him a beer. The man explains his lack of access to a shower, to which Callow responds insensitively. Callow is also seen in another clip riding his bike on the sidewalk, making offensive remarks towards pedestrians.
The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about Callow’s conduct. The racing community is closely monitoring the investigation and awaiting further developments.
