A committed school principal tragically took her own life by jumping off a cliff due to persistent homophobic harassment she had endured. Caroline Grandjean, living in Cantal, France with her spouse, left an online message before her suicide on the first day of the school year. The police found her body near Anglards-de-Salers.
Grandjean, who had faced insults and false accusations like being called a “Pedophile,” had taken a break from work due to the ongoing abuse. However, as the new school term approached, she decided to end her life. In a message on a Facebook group for school principals, she expressed her struggles and hinted at her impending fate.
Her body was discovered close to her residence, having fallen from a cliff edge. The town had previously witnessed similar mistreatment towards her, leading her to leave a previous job. The harassment intensified after her marriage to a woman was discovered, with homophobic incidents escalating.
Despite filing police reports and seeking help, no action was taken to protect Grandjean from the harassment. Colleagues and friends expressed shock and sorrow over her death, emphasizing the lack of support she received. Thierry Pajot, a local union leader, highlighted the town’s failure to assist her, stating that proposed security measures came too late.
Those who knew Grandjean mourned her loss deeply, with one colleague expressing regret over the tragic outcome. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of bullying and the importance of supporting individuals facing discrimination.
