A recent study by Blood Pressure UK revealed that more than 40% of adults in the UK are unaware of a dangerous condition known as high blood pressure, which often remains undiagnosed. The research, involving 2,000 participants aged 40-55, highlighted that one in three individuals do not routinely monitor their blood pressure. Alarmingly, only 11% of those surveyed knew that individuals over 40 should have their blood pressure checked annually. It is estimated that around 4.2 million people in England are living with undiagnosed high blood pressure.
High blood pressure, commonly referred to as the “silent killer,” poses significant health risks, including heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, vision impairment, and vascular dementia. This condition exerts excessive strain on vital organs such as the heart, blood vessels, brain, kidneys, and eyes, causing gradual damage that often goes unnoticed due to the absence of noticeable symptoms. Regular monitoring is essential for early detection due to the condition’s lack of warning signs.
The most reliable method for checking blood pressure involves using an inflatable cuff on the arm to measure arterial pressure. A healthy blood pressure reading typically falls between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg, while readings outside this range may indicate the need for medical attention or lifestyle modifications.
Blood Pressure UK approximates that five million individuals in the UK have undiagnosed high blood pressure. Dr. Pauline Swift, chair of Blood Pressure UK, expressed her dismay at the findings, emphasizing the importance of knowing one’s blood pressure reading. She urged individuals, especially those over 40, to undergo quick and simple blood pressure checks at home, in pharmacies, or with their general practitioners to safeguard their long-term health.
Phil Pyatt, CEO of the charity, highlighted the significance of Know Your Numbers! Week, emphasizing that a small lifestyle change, like reducing salt intake or increasing physical activity, could potentially save lives. He stressed the importance of not waiting for symptoms to appear, as high blood pressure often manifests without warning signs.
It is crucial to have regular blood pressure checks to detect high blood pressure early. In some cases, individuals with severely high blood pressure may experience specific symptoms.
