“Retired Nurse Dies in Tragic Beekeeping Accident”

A retired nurse named Kathleen Devine tragically lost her life in a bee-related incident while harvesting honey in Co. Mayo, Ireland. Kathleen and her husband Des, both passionate beekeepers, were assisting friends with honey extraction near their residence in Ballycastle when the bees turned aggressive, resulting in Kathleen being stung multiple times. Despite immediate medical attention and airlifting to Sligo University Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.

The incident, which occurred during a routine honey extraction, involved a hive rather than a swarm of bees. An eyewitness shared that the bees became defensive over their honey during the extraction process, leading to the unfortunate event. The witness mentioned that even though Kathleen was wearing protective gear, the bees managed to penetrate her suit, causing the tragic outcome.

Authorities confirmed their response to the medical emergency involving Kathleen in Ballycastle and her subsequent transfer to the hospital, where she passed away. Another individual who provided assistance during the incident sustained minor injuries and was treated at Mayo University Hospital. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the circumstances surrounding Kathleen’s death, with the local Coroner overseeing the case.
