Tommy Fleetwood’s £120k Prize Mishap Resolved

Tommy Fleetwood missed out on £120,000 in prize money after finishing T12 at The Open Championship in 2018. Despite his T16 finish at Royal Portrush last week, the 34-year-old English golfer is still pursuing his first major victory.

Fleetwood, not a serious contender, ended with a seven-under par score, while Scottie Scheffler dominated the tournament from the beginning and clinched his first Claret Jug with a four-shot lead.

Having previously been the Open runner-up in 2019, Fleetwood’s career earnings stand at an impressive £23.1 million, mostly contributed by the tournament. However, there was a mix-up in the past when his prize money was mistakenly sent to an American man named Thomas Fleetwood.

Thomas Fleetwood, a 1959-born club professional from Florida, who had attempted to qualify for the European Senior Tour, confirmed he was trying to contact the English golfer. The PGA Tour star took the error in stride, stating the European Tour was investigating the issue.

The incident amused both parties involved, with the European Tour acknowledging the clerical error and apologizing for any inconvenience caused. Fleetwood is now due to receive £137,535 for his recent performance at The Open, hoping for a smooth transaction this time around.
