Shocking new video footage has captured the moment an elderly driver veered off the road and plunged into the sea, remaining motionless behind the wheel as her vehicle sank underwater.
The incident occurred at the passenger ferry terminal on Waiheke Island, New Zealand, where an SUV crashed through a glass bike shelter before entering the ocean. Witnesses observed the silver SUV crashing through the glass structure and a fence, causing debris to scatter in all directions.
As the SUV continued its path, it eventually nosedived into the water, submerging as waves washed over the vehicle. A time-lapse video showed the car rolling forward and disappearing into the deep sea, prompting bystanders to throw a life ring to the stranded elderly driver.
Fortunately, the driver managed to escape from the sinking car and climb up an emergency ladder to safety. Images captured the destruction caused to bikes and railings in the vicinity.
Authorities reported that the driver received on-site medical attention, although her current condition remains unknown. Police confirmed that the vehicle submerged in the water due to the driver’s high level of breath alcohol, leading to potential charges against the 73-year-old woman.
Following the incident, a crane-equipped boat was summoned to retrieve the wrecked car from the seabed. Auckland Transport disclosed that the damaged bike shelter would undergo assessment for repairs, with considerations for a full replacement based on the extent of damage.
Plans are in place to address the shelter and railing replacements once the area is secure, with maintenance teams prepared to execute the necessary actions.
