In a recent study by Scottish Friendly, parents anticipate spending up to £1,000 per child during the school summer holidays. The research indicates that UK parents project an average weekly expense of £167 on childcare and activities over the six-week break, totaling £1,002 per child. In London, where costs are higher, this figure climbs to £236 weekly or £1,416 for the entire summer.
The majority of parents, 87%, view summer holidays as a financial burden and are actively seeking ways to reduce expenses. Strategies include engaging in free activities like National Trust outings (33%), setting and adhering to a summer budget (24%), seeking assistance from grandparents and extended family (18%), utilizing savings (10%), and using tax-free childcare vouchers (9%).
According to Kevin Brown, a savings specialist at Scottish Friendly, many families face stress and financial pressure during the summer holidays due to the escalating costs of childcare and activities. While it is positive to see parents planning ahead and managing expenses prudently, the reliance on savings to cover additional childcare costs raises concerns about potential financial repercussions in the long run.
