“Aldi Maintains Lead as UK’s Most Budget-Friendly Supermarket”

Aldi has once again secured its position as the most budget-friendly supermarket in the UK. Which? has disclosed its recent supermarket price analysis for June 2025.

The consumer advocate organization compared the pricing of 79 items across eight prominent grocery retailers and found that the total cost at Aldi averaged £131.52 for the month.

Lidl closely followed, with an average expenditure of £131.87 when using the Lidl Plus loyalty app, only 35p more than Aldi, or £131.89 without Lidl Plus.

The selection of 79 items encompassed both branded and own-label products, such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For a larger shopping basket comprising 196 items, Asda emerged as the most economical supermarket, with an average cost of £484.60 in June. Tesco secured the second spot with a Clubcard, having an average bill of £492.86.

However, without a Clubcard, the same basket of goods averaged £528.45. Waitrose stood out as the priciest option for both the smaller and larger shopping carts, totaling £178.64 and £554.68, respectively.

Aldi and Lidl were not part of the comprehensive comparison due to their product differences compared to other supermarkets. The analysis factored in special offer prices and loyalty discounts where relevant but excluded multi-buy deals.

Reena Sewraz, Retail Editor at Which?, commented, “Aldi has once again clinched the title of the UK’s most economical supermarket according to our latest pricing evaluation, closely followed by Lidl just 35p behind.

“The larger grocery basket demonstrates that Asda remains one of the most cost-effective supermarkets, outperforming membership prices at Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons.

“Given that food expenses continue to strain household budgets, being discerning pays off as our study indicates that opting for one supermarket over another could potentially save you up to £70 on a substantial shopping trip.”
