Anthony Joshua in Minor Car Crash: Ogun & Lagos Issue Statement

The Ogun and Lagos State Governments issued a joint declaration concerning the recent vehicle collision involving Anthony Joshua in Nigeria. The ex-heavyweight champion sustained minor injuries in a fatal accident that resulted in the death of two individuals.

Following the incident, both state governments confirmed that Anthony Joshua, a British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, was in a traffic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The collision occurred between the vehicle carrying a team of four and a stationary truck, leading to the fatalities. The governments expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished them strength in coping with their loss.

Anthony Joshua and another passenger were promptly taken to a specialized medical facility in Lagos, where medical professionals confirmed their stable condition without the need for immediate emergency medical procedures. A dedicated medical team is closely monitoring their progress, with Anthony Joshua conscious and in contact with his family.

Both Ogun and Lagos States are actively overseeing the situation to ensure the individuals involved receive top-notch medical attention. Simultaneously, investigations into the accident’s circumstances have commenced. The public’s concern is acknowledged, and privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family is requested at this time.

The statement was jointly signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media to the Governor of Ogun State, and Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy for Lagos State.

During the incident, Joshua was traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary lorry on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria reported that the crash involved a black Lexus Jeep and a stationary red commercial Sinotruck. Five adult males were involved, with two fatalities, one injury, and two individuals unharmed. Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries and was rescued alive.

The injured individual received medical attention, and the deceased were taken to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division was informed for further investigation and documentation. Preliminary findings suggest that the Lexus Jeep, potentially traveling above the legal speed limit, lost control during an overtaking maneuver and collided with the parked truck.
