Anthony Joshua made a somber visit to a funeral home to pay his respects to Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele after being released from the hospital. Joshua sustained minor injuries in a car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, resulting in the tragic deaths of his two close friends.
Following his discharge from the hospital in Lagos, the British boxer, aged 36, will now focus on recovering at his home in Nigeria. Before doing so, he accompanied his mother to the funeral home where Ghami and Ayodele are laid to rest.
A statement from local authorities expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, emphasizing the tragic nature of the accident involving Anthony Joshua and his friends on December 29, 2025. The statement also extended prayers for the souls of the departed and strength for their loved ones during this difficult time.
Despite the heavy emotional burden of losing his friends, Joshua was deemed fit for home recovery after his hospital discharge. He and his mother paid their final respects at the funeral home in Lagos before the bodies were to be repatriated later.
Acknowledging the outpouring of public support, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed gratitude for the concern shown after the unfortunate incident. They also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and praised the medical team at Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi for their exceptional care.
The fatal accident occurred when Joshua’s black SUV collided with a parked truck, resulting in the loss of his two friends. Joshua was in Nigeria on holiday following his recent victory over Jake Paul in Miami. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities seeking the truck driver who illegally parked on the highway shoulder.
The driver of the SUV, who was discharged from the hospital, provided a statement to the police. According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, overspeeding and a burst tire on the passenger side led to the loss of control and subsequent collision with the stationary truck due to excessive speed.
