“Beware: Bringing Prohibited Foods into UK Could Lead to £5,000 Fines”

Travel experts are cautioning that bringing certain food items like cheese, cured meats, and sandwiches into the UK could result in fines as high as £5,000. The recent tightening of UK border rules aims to control the spread of foot and mouth disease, a contagious livestock virus concerning parts of Europe. Despite the ban introduced in April, there is no specified end date, prompting travelers to be mindful of their luggage contents.

Jane Bolton, a Travel Expert from Erna Low, highlighted that under current biosecurity laws, meat and dairy products are prohibited from entering Great Britain from the EU or other restricted areas. This includes various cheeses, meat products such as salami and pâté, and dairy items like milk and yoghurt.

The regulations also extend to food items containing meat or dairy, such as sandwiches or baked goods. Non-animal products like chocolates, bread, wines, beers, and spirits are still permissible for travel. It is advised to double-check ingredients for hidden dairy or meat components in sauces or fillings before packing.

The stricter measures are in response to the rising cases of foot and mouth disease in Europe, aiming to safeguard UK farms and livestock from potential contamination. Travelers are reminded that even small traces of meat or dairy can pose risks. It is crucial to adhere to the guidelines and declare any questionable items at customs to avoid fines or confiscation.

Jane emphasized the importance of enjoying local foods while abroad and avoiding carrying meat, cheese, or dairy products to prevent airport delays or penalties upon arrival in the UK.
