According to McAfee Labs, there has been a significant 600% rise in PayPal-related attacks since the beginning of 2025.
The majority of these threats are distributed through deceptive emails claiming account suspensions or other alarming changes, prompting recipients to update their information. Unfortunately, the links provided in these emails are counterfeit and lead to users unwittingly providing their account data to scammers. McAfee Labs also highlighted other prevalent scams like fake PayPal gift card offers, phony invoices, and customer support scams related to billing issues.
McAfee emphasized that scammers continuously adapt their strategies to exploit well-known companies like PayPal. They noted a recent uptick in a sophisticated campaign where users receive official-looking emails with urgent warnings to update their account information within 48 hours under the threat of account suspension.
To combat these scams, PayPal offers a dedicated webpage to educate users on recognizing and avoiding online scams. McAfee urges caution when interacting with any communication purportedly from PayPal, advising users to verify messages directly through the official PayPal website or app. Additionally, they provided a list of top 10 tips to safeguard against PayPal scams, including advice on scrutinizing email senders, avoiding suspicious links, and promptly reporting any suspicious activity to PayPal.
