“Bodybuilding Obsession: £35k on Steroids Sparks Near-Death Crisis”

A man who was dedicated to bodybuilding spent a significant amount of money on steroids, which led to a life-threatening situation. Zak Wilkinson, 32, invested more than £35,000 over two years in steroid use and extreme dietary habits, such as meticulously measuring syrups in his coffee and salt on his meals, to achieve a muscular physique for bodybuilding contests.

Wilkinson’s routine included consuming steroids like Anavar, Masteron, and Equipoise, costing him over £750 monthly, with injections up to three times daily. His strict diet consisted of six daily meals consisting mainly of broccoli, chicken, rice, egg whites, and steak, paired with 45 minutes of daily cardio at the gym.

On March 23, Wilkinson’s rigorous regimen took a toll when he began experiencing seizures, vomiting, and excessive sweating. His sister, Chelsea Wilkinson, 37, promptly placed him in the recovery position and called for emergency assistance, leading to his admission to the ICU at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire.

Initially suspected to be meningitis, doctors later attributed his symptoms to his steroid and fat loss tablet consumption, resulting in “likely provoked seizures in context of multiple drugs.” Wilkinson was induced into a coma for seven days, facing a critical condition where medical professionals advised his family to prepare for the worst. In a miraculous turn of events, he survived without neurological damage, despite being non-verbal for three days.

Following his recovery, Wilkinson had to relearn basic motor skills like walking, having lost significant strength, even struggling to lift his three-year-old son, Saint. He now aims to raise awareness among young bodybuilders about the risks of harming their bodies.

Reflecting on his experience, Wilkinson, a rope access scaffolder from Middlesbrough, emphasized the addictive nature of steroids and the detrimental effects on libido, erectile function, and mood stability. He highlighted the financial burden and meticulous tracking involved in his strict regimen, cautioning against the allure of enhancing physical appearance at the expense of health.

Wilkinson shared insights into the obsessive monitoring of his diet, physical activities, and hormone intake, stressing the pervasive desire for quick aesthetic improvements that often lead to harmful consequences. He urged individuals to consider the long-term repercussions of their choices, acknowledging the sobering aftermath of his own journey.
