Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped tragedy by changing seats just before a fatal car accident claimed the lives of two of his friends. The incident occurred on Monday, resulting in minor injuries for Joshua, who was rushed to the hospital. The driver of the car has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
According to the driver’s lawyer, the accident was deemed an unintentional event due to brake failure. It was disclosed that Joshua initially sat in the front seat but switched places at the driver’s request because of visibility issues. The journey began in Lagos, with the seating arrangement changing during the trip.
Following the incident, the driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, faced charges including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless driving, negligence, and driving without a valid license. The case was adjourned to January 20 by the Sagamu Magistrate Court.
Apart from being close friends, Ghami served as Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was a trainer. Joshua, a British-Nigerian boxer, was vacationing in Nigeria after his recent victory over Jake Paul in Miami.
Various figures from the boxing world, including Eddie Hearn, Tony Bellew, Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury, and Wladimir Klitschko, expressed their condolences for the tragic loss. Joshua, who was discharged from the hospital on New Year’s Eve, has not yet made any public statements regarding the accident.
In a joint statement with Ogun state, Joshua was confirmed to be in good condition and recovering at home. The statement also mentioned Joshua’s visit to pay his respects to his deceased friends at a Lagos funeral home before their repatriation.
