Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps has released new photos depicting the aftermath of a tragic accident involving British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua. The organization has also provided a comprehensive account of the incident that claimed the lives of two individuals.
Anthony Joshua was hospitalized after being extricated from the wreckage of the SUV he was traveling in, along with a driver and other passengers, on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Nigeria on Monday morning. Reports indicate that a blown tire caused the vehicle Joshua was in to veer off course, leading to a collision with a stationary lorry after losing control.
According to an update from the Ogun State police, an investigation is currently underway, while the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has also issued an update.
The FRSC shared a series of previously unseen images of the damaged SUV and the truck it crashed into on Monday, December 29, at 2:10pm GMT. The pictures show officials at the scene alongside witnesses, with the back of the truck covered with tape.
In a statement spread across multiple posts, the FRSC confirmed the fatal crash involving Anthony Joshua and a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, Ogun State. The incident, which occurred around noon, involved a black Lexus Jeep carrying Joshua and a red Sinotruck. Out of the five adult males involved, two lost their lives, one sustained injuries, and two escaped unharmed. Joshua, who suffered minor injuries, was rescued alive.
The FRSC mentioned that preliminary findings suggest the vehicle Joshua was in was speeding beyond the legal limit and lost control during an overtaking maneuver, resulting in the collision with the stationary truck. The organization emphasized the dangers of excessive speed and improper overtaking, which are major contributors to fatal road accidents in Nigeria.
The FRSC extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a speedy recovery. Motorists were urged to adhere to traffic regulations, avoid reckless driving behaviors, and prioritize safety, especially during high-traffic periods like the holiday season.
The Ogun State government reported that the two deceased individuals were “two male foreign nationals,” as per initial reports. Anthony Joshua has not made any public statements about the accident from the hospital, the location of which has not been disclosed by authorities.
