A group of courageous British individuals faced extreme snowstorms with hurricane-force winds in an attempt to rescue their friend who tragically lost her life during the ordeal. Hayley Newnham, Tom Player, Matt Smith, Christian Aldridge, and Victoria Bond, all from Newquay, Cornwall, embarked on a hiking expedition in Chile’s Patagonia region. While trekking in the Torres del Paine National Park on November 17, they encountered severe blizzard conditions on a mountain.
The unexpected blizzard led to the untimely deaths of five people, including Victoria, as the group valiantly struggled to save her from the harsh elements. Tom Player described the harrowing situation as being akin to facing a category 3 hurricane, with visibility reduced to mere meters due to the blinding snow. Despite the grueling conditions, the group managed to escape to safety, but could not locate Victoria. Determined to find her, they retraced their steps back into the blizzard armed only with essential survival gear.
Driven by adrenaline, the group raced back to the point where they had turned around, climbing 1,000 meters in just 45 minutes. However, due to deteriorating conditions and the need to assist another distressed trekker, Tom Player made the difficult decision to turn back, prioritizing his own safety. Meanwhile, other members of the group endeavored to rescue Victoria and another injured woman, sadly, both succumbed to the extreme weather conditions.
Victoria’s lifeless body was eventually discovered at the mountain’s peak, with the cause of death attributed to hyperthermia and exhaustion. Despite the valiant efforts of the rescue team, it was too late to save her. Colleagues at Visit Isles of Scilly fondly remembered Victoria as a vibrant individual full of life and enthusiasm.
