“BT Urges Transition to Digital Voice as Copper Landline Deactivation Looms”

BT has released a crucial update regarding landline services, urging households still relying on older copper cables to make the necessary changes. The longstanding copper infrastructure, in use for more than a century, is set to be deactivated within a year, with the scheduled date being January 31, 2027.

This transition marks a significant shift towards digital services that utilize internet connectivity for making calls, emphasizing the need for millions of users to adopt these modern solutions. BT and other companies stress the importance of this upgrade due to the outdated and overloaded nature of the current copper system, which no longer meets contemporary connectivity demands.

BT’s new Digital Voice system offers enhanced features such as improved call quality, call forwarding to mobile devices, and better call screening options to combat scams and unwanted solicitations. While over three million homes in the UK have already made the switch to Digital Voice, there is a substantial number of households that still need to transition.

In a message to Mirror Online, BT emphasized the urgency for customers to act promptly, ensuring a smooth transition to the new digital platform to avoid any disruptions in phone or broadband services as the deadline approaches. The switch to digital is relatively straightforward for most users, with many BT handsets already compatible with digital landlines and the option to retain existing phone numbers without any cost increase.

Customers with special requirements, like those using telecare devices, are advised to notify their provider promptly to arrange appropriate support. It is crucial for all users to confirm their readiness for the network upgrade before the copper infrastructure is decommissioned.

BT’s Group Chief Executive, Allison Kirkby, highlighted the significance of enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure to guarantee reliable and secure connectivity for all. By investing heavily in digital networks, BT aims to foster growth and opportunities for individuals, businesses, and communities across the UK.
