The UK council has voted to remove a street name associated with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, a decision made following his marriage to Sarah Ferguson. Prince Andrew Way, located in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, was named after him when he became the Duke of York in 1986. However, due to his connection with Jeffrey Epstein and the removal of his titles by King Charles III, there has been a shift in public perception towards the street’s name.
Local council members have initiated the process of renaming Prince Andrew Way due to numerous requests received since King Charles III’s decision. Lauren Gray, an Alliance Party Councillor, proposed the name change, citing a surge in requests over the past year. The proposal to rename the street in honor of another royal has been supported by the council.
Gray suggested retaining the street’s royal connection by renaming it after Queen Elizabeth II as a tribute to her leadership. She emphasized the importance of involving the community in the decision-making process, considering Carrickfergus’s historical ties to the royal family.
Following unanimous support from all political parties represented on the council, a motion has been accepted to proceed with the renaming process. Council officers will prepare a report for councillors, outlining the steps for public consultation, including input from the 10 households on the street.
This decision marks a significant development in response to the changing circumstances surrounding Prince Andrew’s public standing and underscores the community’s desire for a more reflective and inclusive street name.
