Dashcam footage forces plea change in Liverpool FC harm case

Dashcam footage revealing Paul Doyle’s growing agitation may have prompted him to change his plea as he was set to face trial for allegedly causing harm to Liverpool FC supporters during the club’s Premier League victory celebration.

Formerly residing on Burghill Road, West Derby, the 54-year-old Doyle was scheduled for trial at Liverpool Crown Court regarding the incident on Water Street in Liverpool on May 26. His Ford Galaxy had collided with a crowd of over 100 individuals, resulting in injuries to both adults and children.

Initially pleading not guilty to 31 charges, Doyle altered his plea following the disclosure of dashcam footage capturing his escalating agitation near Dale Street and Water Street. He admitted guilt to 17 counts of attempting to cause serious harm intentionally, nine counts of causing serious harm intentionally, three counts of wounding, and one count each of dangerous driving and affray. Sentencing for the case has been postponed to December 15 and 16, with Doyle remaining in custody.

Sarah Hammond, the Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS Mersey-Cheshire, stated that Doyle intentionally drove at members of the public, pushing through the crowd after displaying visible frustration. The prosecutor emphasized the significance of Doyle’s accountability for endangering lives and disrupting the celebratory atmosphere in Liverpool.

Hammond highlighted the impact of the incident, which left 134 individuals, including infants as young as six months, injured. She condemned Doyle’s deliberate actions, affirming that driving a vehicle into a crowd constituted a premeditated act of violence, transforming a day of festivity into chaos. Hammond lauded the swift response of emergency services, underscoring their role in saving lives and praised the resilience and unity displayed by Liverpool in the aftermath of the tragedy.
