David Beckham recently revealed his ultimate meal choice, which may surprise some people. The 50-year-old former England captain and successful businessman, known for showcasing his lifestyle in the Cotswolds, took on the role of guest editor for a special edition of Country Life magazine. In this edition, he discussed his favorite countryside views and his strong connection to rural Britain.
During his guest editorship, Beckham had a conversation with food writer Tom Parker Bowles where he shared his love for a traditional British dish. He expressed his fondness for mashed potatoes, liver, bacon, and plenty of gravy, describing it as a comforting classic that reminds him of his childhood, cooked by his mother and beloved by his grandfather.
Beckham also mentioned his affection for pie, mash, liquor, and jellied eels, stating that this combination would be his ideal last meal. Jellied eels, a dish originating from London’s East End, involve boiling chopped eels in a seasoned stock until they solidify into a jelly-like texture when served cold.
Despite the dish’s historical significance, jellied eels are not universally enjoyed due to their unique salty taste and gelatinous consistency. Beckham, acting as a guest editor for Country Life, joins a list of distinguished individuals who have taken on this role before, including members of the Royal family.
In his discussions with the magazine, Beckham praised director Guy Ritchie for strengthening his appreciation for the countryside, recalling childhood memories of camping in Epping Forest. He described Ritchie as a modern-day caveman who deepened his love for nature through their conversations around a campfire.
Beckham, who married Spice Girl Victoria in 1999 and resides with her in the Cotswolds, shared a heartwarming anecdote about preparing their home for their family’s arrival. The special guest edition of Country Life featuring Beckham’s editorial contributions will be available from October 22 to October 28. Editor-in-chief Mark Hedges commended Beckham’s exceptional knowledge and passion for the countryside, predicting that this edition will become a sought-after collector’s item.
